Everton fall 1-0 at Blackburn

While it certainly was more encouraging than the 6-1 rout at the feet of Arsenal in 2009, Everton once again managed to lose in a season opener Saturday with a 1-0 loss at Blackburn Rovers.

The Toffees gave up the sole score in the 14th minute thanks to a rare goalkeeping gaffe by Tim Howard. The American dropped the ball in the box, and Nikola Kalinic pounced on the opportunity to take the 1-0 lead.

Everton appeared to regain their composure in the 15 minutes leading up to the break but failed to capitalize. The second half presented much of the same as the Blues struggled with their passing with Blackburn pulling back into a more defensive style.

Rovers nearly doubled their total with a handful of dangerous counterattacks, but for the most part, it was two sides playing significantly below their perceived ability for 90 minutes.

The match was the first Everton Premiership loss since February, and only their third in the previous 25 Premier League fixtures.
