Monday MLS Wrap

Thursday, July 22 – San Jose Earthquakes 2, Los Angeles Galaxy 2

So it may not have quite the significance of his 91st minute game-winner against Algeria, but Landon Donovan once again became a late game hero in the California Clasico to tie San Jose. L.A., who outshot San Jose 22-7 on the match, had to come from behind twice to salvage the tie. Edson Buddle also netted a goal for L.A., his league-leading 12th on the season. Bobby Convey and Brandon McDonald scored for the Quakes.

Saturday, July 24 – FC Dallas 1, Toronto FC 1

In perhaps the only match on Saturday not played in 100 degree weather, FC Dallas extended their road unbeaten streak to seven, and Toronto FC extended theirs to nine in a near constant downpour. New signings Maicon Santos for TFC and Milton Rodriguez for FCD each scored second half goals.

Saturday, July 24 – Houston Dynamo 0, Columbus Crew 3

For the seventh consecutive MLS match, the Houston Dynamo failed to win. The Columbus Crew, who currently sit firmly atop the Eastern Conference, took advantage of a remarkable goalkeeping error by Tally Hall, and scored twice in the last ten minutes to lock up the three points.

Saturday, July 24 – Chivas USA 1, Real Salt Lake 1

Kyle Beckerman returned to play for the first time since May, but a goalkeeping error by usually sure-handed Nick Rimando let in the equalizer in the 70th minute. Jesus Padilla let loose a shot from 30 yards out, and Rimando tried to punch it out, but the ball went down and through his legs. RSL actually outshot struggling Chivas 20-5, but just couldn’t manage to take the lead despite having eight on target.

Sunday, July 25 – Colorado Rapids 1, Seattle Sounders FC 2

Steve Zakuani scored twice in the first 20 minutes in a game filled with physical play throughout. Zakuani unloaded in the eighth minute, but saw his shot hit off the post only to deflect off of keeper Matt Pickens into the net. Less than a minute later, Omar Cummings scored off a fantastic strike from the top right corner of the penalty box. A streaking Zakuani finished a low cross from Nyassi in the box for the game winner in the 17th minute.
