With the preface that trusting British newspapers is often an exercise in absurdity, the Daily Mail is reporting that Everton is about to make Mikel Arteta the highest paid player in club history, earning a weekly salary of around £75,000 per week.
Transfer rumors have surrounded the Spaniard since the end of last season, which saw the 28-year old return from a knee injury and resume his role in the Toffee midfield. At times this year, his future at Goodison has been in doubt. Earlier this summer some reported that his kid had some health issues, and he wanted to return to Spain. In other reports, Arteta wanted to remain loyal to the Blues because of the help the club gave him when he struggled with his knee injury.
I would welcome his extension for Everton, but I am a bit conflicted about the amount of money involved. Hopefully, should this occur, the Toffees will also make some room to sign Steven Pienaar to a longer deal as well.
