ESPN/FSC Weekend Line-Up

After the World Cup earlier this summer and a loaded TV schedule last weekend, ESPN will not be broadcasting any matches this weekend for what seems like the first time in forever. It appears that Fox Soccer has picked up the slack for the self-described Worldwide Leader.

All times Central.

FRIDAY

Manchester City vs. Sporting Lisbon – 7:30 p.m. – FSC

After outclassing the future MLS side Portland Timbers last weekend, Machester City will take on Portugal’s Sporting Lisbon in each club’s first match in the Barclays New York Football Challenge. Sporting is coming off an historic night in Boston Wednesday, which saw them fall to Celtic F.C. at Fenway Park, home of the Boston Red Sox. Man City will be playing in the Europa League after finishing fifth in the Premiership last season. Sporting finished fourth in the Portugese Liga, and will also be competing in the Europa League.

SATURDAY

U.S. Under-19 National Championship – 8:00 p.m. – FSC

The FC Delco Hammerheads of Pennsylvania will be taking on the Crew Juniors of Ohio for the Academy national title. Each team features of a number of NCAA Division I Soccer talents. University of Akron, a national soccer powerhouse, will boast of four players in the match, and Villanova will have three.

SUNDAY

Tottenham Hotspur vs. Sporting Lisbon – Noon – FSC

The last day of play at the Barclays New York Football Challenge will feature a doubleheader. Spurs enters the match unbeaten on their current American tour, but have yet to look impressive for a team that will be playing in the Champions League next season.

Manchester City vs. New York Red Bulls – 2:30 p.m. – FSC

In the finale of the New York Challenge, Thierry Henry and the Red Bulls will match up with MCFC. The Red Bulls, and more specifically Henry, looked impressive against Tottenham in the first half Thursday night, but ultimately fell to the Spurs, 1-2. This will mark the last RBNY match until after Wednesday’s All-Star match.

Manchester United vs. Kansas City Wizards – 5:00 p.m. – FSC

The Red Devils will take on the Wizards in their last match leading up to the 2010 MLS All-Star Game. Manchester United have won every match on their current American tour, but were challenged on Wednesday by the Philadelphia Union, who looked like the dominant side at times over the course of the evening. The Wizards are currently 4-8-4 in the MLS this season and sit in fifth place in the Eastern Conference.

Colorado Rapids vs. Seattle Sounders – 9:30 p.m. – FSC

In a match-up of two Western Conference sides that are currently mired in mediocrity, the sixth-place Sounders will host the fourth-place Rapids at Qwest Field. Seattle, who recently added designated player Blaise Nkufo, will look to build on an inspiring performance against Celtic, and Colorado is looking for its first victory since June 5.
