Everton gave up their first goal of the preseason, but managed to pull off their third consecutive win, defeating Brisbane Roar 2-1 to cap a successful Australian tour for The People’s Club.
Jack Rodwell and Magaye Gueye provided the scoring for the Blues and new face Jermaine Beckford was impressive in his first career start in an Everton shirt. Earlier this week, David Moyes expressed high expectations for the former Leeds United standout.
Brisbane played admirably in the first half, managing to avoid damage from a number of solid efforts by Louis Saha and the Toffees.
However, shortly after the halftime break, 19-year old Jack Rodwell launched one of his trademark distance shots, curling one into the net from outside the 18-yard box to put Everton up 1-0 in the 49th minute.
Despite dominating the run of play for much of the match, Brisbane managed to tie in the 66th minute. Following a quick restart, Kosta Barbarouses equalized with a shot from a tough angle in the box.
A pair of young Toffees connected for the winning score in the 83rd minute. Jose Baxter, who entered the match as a sub, crossed the ball to the feet of Gueye, who would tap it in for his first career score for Everton.
The Blues finished the Australian tour, winning all three matches played on the continent. Everton will now head back to Europe for the rest of the preseason, taking on David Moyes’ former club and Championship side Preston North End Saturday.
